OUGD505 - Studio Brief 2 - Worker Research

'They slap us and call us dogs and donkeys'

Workers making clothes that end up in the stores of the biggest names on the British high street have testified to a shocking regime of abuse, threats, and poverty pay. Many workers in Indian factories earn so little that an entire month's wages would not buy a single item they produce.

"It hurts us to be paid so little. I have to do this and they sell one piece of clothing for more than I get paid in a month," she said. "We cannot eat nutritious food. We don't have a good life, we live in pain for the rest of our life and die in pain.

"We deserve fair compensation," said Shi, 41, who makes $4,700 a year

Sakamma, a 42-year-old mother-of-two working for Gap supplier Texport in Bengaluru, told the tribunal she earned just 22p an hour and that when she finished at the factory she had to work as a domestic help to top up her wages.

Many are forced to work 14-16 hours a day seven days a week, with some workers finishing at 3am only to start again the same morning at 7.30am.

Images posted on Chinese social media show police with riot shields and dogs converging on the third day of a strike at a factory that makes shoes for popular name brands. Workers say their employer, Stella, hasn't paid their housing allowance as required by Chinese labour law.

Workers are allowed to strike, but only under the government-controlled All China Federation of Trade Unions - which critics say is essentially an arm of the government that has failed to stand up for workers.

The poorest making the rich, richest. Used as puppets for pittance.

Legal Rights in the UK.

If an employee who has been verbally abused Is entitled to endless amounts of money For example, the Indiana Supreme Court in 2008 awarded a nurse $325,000 for her claims of intentional infliction of emotional distress and assault after she was screamed at by a surgeon

In comparison to China and other countries involving in sweatshops that don't recieve any form of claim for the treatment. The abuse/slave labour that goes on shows a great difference in the 2 countries. These calculations are basically saying the people in China aren't as important which is utterly disgusting in equal/human rights.

Steel wire meshes have been fitted to windows at Foxconn's factory to stop workers jumping after a rash of suicides believed to be due to harsh management practices
