OUGD405 Studio Brief 1 Design Process - Backing paper Research

Geometric shapes

Having to design our backing paper around shapes seemed rather simple and boring, as solid shapes came to mind at first, then from previously looking at geometric shapes I thought there would be a much more appealing approach towards the final outcome from looking at these kind of shape designs. Although these are still simple looking they are far more advanced in the sense of the positioning and the unique individuality of each image. I'm very fond of the composition, colours and meaning behind designs like this.
for example The point-up triangle can represent male energy, fire and air are masculine elements. The point-down triangle can represent female energy, water and earth are feminine elements.

Thinking of target audience and choice of retail I like the idea of tattoo salons and those that get tattoos themselves specially these particular designs.

OUGD405 Photoshop Induction

Photoshop Induction

we had an induction onphotoshop learning how to use the basic tools within the software, how we came about this was by editing film posters by adding and taking away certain visuals but trying to make it look legit from the things i had placed within the poster.
I'm fairly good at photoshop knowing the tools and how to use them, but from using illustrator so much i forgotten why i used photoshop from the start, but from this tutorial has allowed me to understand the difference and why you would & wouldn't use photoshop for specific things, likewise illustrator.

Here is the original poster we had to manipulate within photoshop giving us knowledge on how to use certain tools when needs be within our work.

I took this image and used the lasso tool so i can take the wolverine and place it within the Looper poster design.

Here is the Film poster i edited, I simply placed wolverine within the poster and Iron mans helmet onto of Bruce Willis using colour adjustments to make them suit the posters colour.  I didn't do much as i was working on my own resources, basing mine on lawless.
Using levels to adjust colour of image bringing in a more whiter image, making it less dirty looking. this will allow the image to fit in with the rest of the manipulated poster. I also learnt how to Use the lasso tool to save some of the image that the magic wand automatically selects to delete.

In the second session i became more familiar with the tools such as having a better understanding of the spot healing/healing as i was able to copy bruce willis's finger as it was missing, allowing it to look more like he's holding the light sabre.

I decided to do a humorous lawless poster, when editing there faces into the given body I used a different way from the others, which was by using a vector mask only because its easier to undo what you erase out and the fact it doesn't damage the pixels of the photos. the humour side to it is simply the fact i've turned Tom Hardy into a alcoholic and Shia Labeouf into Jango Fett, Baring in mind I'm going over the top with time period from when lawless was set in 1831

OUGD405 Studio Brief 1 Design Process - Backing Paper Research

Barbara Hepworth - Opposing Form

Seeing as this brief is based on shapes i thought i would look into Barbara Hepworths - Opposing form pieces of art. They all give off a certain mood through the use of colour and how wild shapes have been used throughout each piece of art, for example Barbara associated a piece of her work on the Greek culture, which is clever in a way because it only makes sense what it is related to after being told.

I think this kind of style would be great as backing paper for frames, creating mood and a visual understanding of the image you want to place within the frame.

OUGD405 Studio Brief 1 Design Process - Frame Research

I first looked into actual frames that you can buy from stores such as Wilko IKEA and what they have used as a backing paper theme as i wasn't to sure. I noticed in older frames shapes and patterns were used, but I'm guessing they thought it would be more appealing to see what an actual image would look like within the design of the frame itself.
For my frame shape I think I'll go with a rectangle just because to me it seems like a more modern approach rather then circular as that reminds me of a more Victorian style.
I'm quite keen on the style of having loads of frames placed together that has one big image within all frames, if I was to use that style then I think I would have to select the biggest paper size that our brief has to offer as the frame itself would take slot of space up.

At first this kind of frame reminded me of those jewellery Lockets and instantly reminded me of Victorian portrait or old fashion pictures of family's

This frame to me is far more appealing then the others as it is unusually different, I think it is a more upto date design being able to place various pictures inside, aswell as placing just one picture that fits all frames which is a more current style of today.
I would be interested in taking this frame design further seeing if my backing paper designs suit an look unique as a whole.

For the backing paper design I have thought of a theme I could possibly pursue that being 'The generation of Today' the typical looks such as the one i am approaching that being the Beards, Tattoos & short back an sides.
The theme sprung up only because Im personally trying the beard look

The Research I'm gathering is mostly based on beards & tattoos relating it to "The generation of Today'
and the humour around the subject. This research allowing me to get a perspective of the layout i'll be approaching as well as the elements i'll be using within the design to make it look contemporary to suit my target audience and retail choice.

I like this modern looking design towards various uses of type and a simple silhouette of the beard aswell as the layout, I also think the texture within the type is very effective giving off that westen style look, as within that day an age I'm not sure they saw it as fashion but preferably the fact that shaving wasn't as simple then, to how it is now.

Target Audience

I like the idea of placing a few designs in this Bookstore that is based in Leeds, only because i have already visited this store that gave off this Edgy feeling, As well as the owner having a very long beard himself, I believe to think that the kind of target audience would be between a young adult & middle aged them having a keen interest within the creative industry, so the design I would approach would be fairly humorous and appreciated as modern design.
This allowing me to find my place of retail as the interior design looks modern as my approach to the backing paper designs are also modern looking.
I know this isn't somewhere that sells frames but i could picture books and frames being a reasonable pair within the store.

Urban outfitters would also be another relevant retail choice as they also tend to get humours edgy products as the interior is all about standing out and looking different from other stores, meaning getting strange products to attract a broader amount of people. from what I've seen when being in the urban outfitters store is that they have a lot of jokey items and from there it caught my attention an now I've always had a keen interest in the store.

I think my designs are quite humorous relating it to the whole 'generation of today' concept i had and a lot of people of our age shop at urban outfitters, I personally believe people that shop there are always edgy and indie usually having tattoo, pircings and beards.

Studio Brief
Re-imagine the backing paper for a photo frame. This must include the dimensions of the frame. You must produce a minimum of three designs, which work as a set across three different frame sizes. Choose from the frame dimensions below:
6x4 inches - 7x5 inches - 8x6 inches
A5 - A4 - A3
The concept of your design should be shape, you can interpret this as a literal shape e.g. circle, sphere, triangle, square, box etc or be more imaginative. Consider how you frame your shape, be creative with your manipulations and compositions. Consider how to engage the audience and the target market of your photoframe. For example a Wilkinsons photoframe would be packaged and designed with a different aesthetic to a Harvey Nicholls frame.
All typography and vector based images must be produced in Adobe Illustrator. Any images must be manipulated in Adobe Photoshop. The final composition must be produced in Adobe Photoshop.
.
Background / Considerations
Explore a range of concepts in your research and development of your own ideas. Consider the usage, functionality and display within commercial outlets when resolving this problem.
Not all your investigations should take place on the Mac. Digital image capture methods such as scanning and digital photography allow you to import media from a range of sources (photographs, photocopies, drawings, tracings, found material etc.)
Once you have imported this material how can you manipulate using the tools and capabilities of Photoshop (cropping, selecting, layering, repeating, colour changes, reversing out etc.)
Mandatory Requirements
In preparation for the second session you must have photographed a selection of images to work with.
The frame backing papers must exist as part of a set/series and must include the frame dimensions.
Deliverables

A quantity of visual investigation/research.
Developmental work in sketchbooks/worksheets.
Three frame backing papers designed and mocked up in a photo frame.
Minimum of 4 design boards, presenting and discussing the following:
Research
Initial designs
Design choices (colour, format, type, layout)
Final designs
